About the Role

CLASP is seeking a seasoned professional to join our communications team, leading the efforts to make CLASP research and publications as impactful as possible. This is a new position. The person will be involved with all premier publications across CLASP, overseeing process, production, and dissemination.

This position will report to the Chief Communications & Development Officer, who is based in Washington, DC. The candidate will provide strategic communications guidance for teams across the organization and manage a team of approximately two people to deliver compelling products across platforms.

Key Responsibilities

Process

  • Systematize & facilitate a complicated, matrixed editorial process for premier publications: Coordinate a cross-organizational team dedicated to improving our processes for reports; work with the team to socialize and improve that process over time; drive that process for certain reports.
  • Plan & budget: work with research, program, and communications teams to develop publication teams, budgets, and schedules. Provide communications expertise – when / where is the right time/place to launch for maximal impact? Drive ambition.
  • Improve brand visibility: Identify new opportunities to push CLASP’s brand and messages through digital events, new media, and other platforms. Work with the broader communications team to optimize, maintain, and drive the editorial calendar.

Production 

  • Review: Review content for clarity, meaning, organization, and impact; engage in feedback and iteration. Oversee the communications team’s contributions to the editorial process.
  • Track & communicate: Track schedules and drive timelines and deadlines; ensure smooth hand-offs; communicate how delays and/or adjustments impact production timelines, final publication, and other work. Liaise internally and externally (i.e., with publication partners) as needed.
  • Collaborate with internal & external resources: Marshal internal and external resources appropriately. Leverage the CLASP team’s expertise by engaging copyeditors, graphic designers, web developers, and media experts as needed.
  • Oversee subcontractors: With support from junior staff, ensure that CLASP communications subcontractors are appropriately oriented and/or engaged; ensure their work product is in line with the CLASP brand and objectives.

Dissemination 

  • Communicate cutting-edge research: Work with research, program, and communications teams to package and message CLASP reports for specific audiences for maximal impact through CLASP channels (e.g., newsletters, social, website, videos, etc.) and externally (at major international events and in the media).
  • Develop media relationships: Build CLASP’s media partners through regular engagement and pitching; mentor CLASP team members on effective media engagement.
  • Liaise with partners: Lead and/or support the development of communications coalitions to aid in research launches, interfacing with partner NGOs, subject matter experts, and champions. Seek opportunities for CLASP presence via our partners.
  • Generate compelling stories & case studies: Work with the communications, program, and research teams to pull information from multiple reports/sources to generate case studies, impact stories, and other collateral for a variety of audiences, including donors, the CLASP Board, for the annual report, etc.
  • Facilitate digital tools: CLASP runs several online tools. Work with the CLASP team and subcontractors to ensure current tools are maintained and healthy and communicated about, and on the development of new tools as needed.

Qualifications

  • A track record of achievement in communicating research; international experience required. Directionally, we are looking for 4-6 years of previous communications experience.
  • Candidates with experience at the nexus of climate change mitigation and international development are strongly preferred. Those with experience in international conventions, energy efficiency, renewable energy, public policy, public health, sustainable development, agriculture, and/or environmental/ecosystem management will also be a fit.
  • Experience leading an editorial process with subject matter experts is required. Proven ability to take complex, technical ideas and turn them into compelling messages and narratives required.
  • Experience working across a variety of formats: long publications, short digital formats, briefs, social media, etc.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an orientation toward working in a collaborative environment. Ability to maintain composure, flexibility, and a sense of humor. Ability to provide productive feedback at multiple levels, internally and externally.
  • Experience working across time zones.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud applications and Microsoft Office Suite.

Compensation and Location

CLASP provides its employees with a highly competitive salary that is benchmarked annually with other non-profit organizations in the DC metropolitan area. This is a full-time position that can be based in places where CLASP is already legally registered: D.C., Maryland, Virginia, New York, or Massachusetts. Exceptional candidates outside of these geographies may be considered. Candidates outside of the DC area will be expected to visit Washington DC for one week per quarter. It is currently customary for staff living in the DC area to come to the office about once a week, on Wednesdays. International travel will be required (approx. 2 times per year).

Compensation for this role starts at $77K and can increase based on the candidate’s level of experience.
