The Efficiency for Access (EforA) Coalition issue paper “Refrigeration: The Next Step in Off-Grid Energy Services” was developed in advance of workshop held in London on April 28-29, 2016. The issue paper summarizes information about off-grid refrigerator technology and market trends that was available at the time. After the publication of this issue paper, CLASP 1) conducted an extensive product procurement and testing effort to develop a technical performance baseline for off-grid refrigerators available on the open market, 2) launched and administered the 2016-17 Global LEAP Awards Off-Grid Refrigerator Competition, and 3) continued to expand the broader knowledge base regarding off-grid refrigerator performance and market dynamics (see the LEIA Technology Summaries). The analyses and recommendations included in this issue paper therefore represent a snapshot of the off-grid refrigerator market in its earliest days.
It discusses how off-grid refrigeration can bring a raft of benefits to the developing world – such as keeping vaccines and other medicines viable in weak or off-grid clinical settings, improving the lifespan of products sold by farmers and fishermen, or reducing the amount of time each day that households spend shopping or gathering food.
The issues brief also provides a summary of current off-grid refrigeration technology and market trends, and begins to identify some of the core challenges faced by specific stakeholder groups and market actors.
The purpose of the paper is to start a conversation amongst the partners in the Efficiency for Access Coalition about how they can work together to catalyze innovations in off-grid refrigeration design, marketing, finance and policy.
The Efficiency for Access Coalition is led by the Clean Energy Ministerial’s Global Leap initiative. The Coalition aims to advance the development and deployment of energy efficient appliances and equipment that are appropriately designed for energy access settings.
