CLASP launches $1.4 Million Solar E-Waste Innovation Prize

Sustainable management of solar e-waste is an emerging priority for the off-grid solar sector. Many industry leaders have explored potential e-waste management solutions including through product repair and preventive maintenance while others have deployed pilots – yet these efforts remain nascent and under-resourced.

With support from USAID, and in partnership with GOGLA, CLASP is launching a $1.4 million Global LEAP Solar E-waste Innovation Prize for sub-Saharan Africa. The program will support innovations in e-waste management for the off-grid sector, and in doing so, catalyze broader and longer-term action to address the e-waste challenge. Grants will be available for the following:

  • Recycling and e-waste management companies seeking to expand business activities in support of the off-grid sector across sub-Saharan Africa, and
  • Solar home system distributors seeking to pilot and implement end-of-life programs.

The application window for the inaugural round will open in March 2019, with announcement of award winners anticipated this May. Additional details about the program’s timeline, eligibility requirements, and selection process will be available soon.
