On May 12, winners were named for the inaugural Global LEAP Outstanding Off-Grid Appliance Awards competition, a Clean Energy Ministerial initiative to identify and promote the world's best, most energy-efficient off-grid color televisions and LED room lighting appliances.
The United Nations' Sustainable Energy for All campaign, the International Finance Corporation's Lighting Global program, and the Clean Energy Ministerial's Global LEAP Awards are coordinating to support global markets for quality-assured, energy-efficient energy access products. These efforts are priming opportunities to manufacturers and distributors, and transforming the lives of people throughout the developing world.

The Global LEAP Awards’ first round of competition identified energy-efficient, high quality off-grid LED room lighting appliances and flat-panel color televisions. Nominations for the LED room lighting appliance awards closed on October 11, 2013.

CLASP initiated the coordination of a new global program in support of the Global Lighting and Energy Access Partnership (Global LEAP), a Clean Energy Ministerial initiative with a mission to drive and support sustainable commercial markets that increase modern energy access worldwide. The first round of the Global LEAP awards will focus on off-grid LED lighting applications. The second round will focus on off-grid flat panel televisions.

SEAD has undertaken several market transformation initiatives to recognize most efficient products and the development of procurement tools to help procurement officials make more sustainable procurement decisions. Through these activities, SEAD member governments have been "pulling" the global market towards more efficient products.
